The Arc de Triomphe
Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 in honour of the imperial armies, the Arc de Triomphe was completed under the reign of Louis-Philippe in 1836. Its designer, the architect Chalgrin, drew his inspiration from the arches of antiquity.
Although it still celebrates the triumph of the French armies from the Revolution to the present day, its significance has changed since the 19th century. Today, it plays a key role in civic and civil life. In 1920, the arrival of the Unknown Soldier made the Arc de Triomphe a place of remembrance under which the Republic gathers on 11 November and 8 May, or on Bastille Day.
Covering the history of the 19th and 20th centuries, architecture, town planning and civic education, the study of the monument meets the requirements of interdisciplinarity.
